Colour Overlays & Colorimetry Assessments
At Raison Opticians, we offer coloured overlay trials and specialist Colorimetry Assessments to help people experiencing visual discomfort when reading, writing or using digital screens.
Coloured overlays and precision-tinted lenses may be beneficial for individuals experiencing visual stress, including some people with dyslexia, light sensitivity or migraines.
What is Colorimetry?
Colorimetry is a personalised assessment that identifies whether coloured filters may help reduce visual discomfort. Following a successful coloured overlay trial, we can determine the most appropriate precision tint for your individual needs.
The tint can then be incorporated into prescription or non-prescription spectacle lenses, helping make reading, writing and screen use more comfortable.
What is Visual Stress?
Visual stress is a perceptual processing difficulty that can make reading and other visually demanding tasks uncomfortable or tiring. Symptoms may include:
Words appearing to move, blur or shimmer
Difficulty tracking lines of text
Headaches or eye strain when reading
Print appearing distorted or ghosted
Sensitivity to bright lights or glare
Children experiencing visual stress may avoid reading, rub their eyes, become fidgety or complain that print hurts their eyes. How Can We Help?
Raison Opticians can provide a personalised approach to identifying and managing visual discomfort.
Depending on individual needs, treatment may include prescription spectacles, visual therapy for binocular vision or muscle imbalances, coloured overlays, or bespoke precision-tinted spectacle lenses.
The aim of treatment is to improve reading comfort, fluency and visual efficiency, helping individuals read for longer periods with greater ease and maintain good comprehension.
What Happens at the Clinic?
Following a full eye examination and binocular vision assessment, we can carry out a Visual Stress Screening where appropriate.
If coloured overlays are not already being used, we may recommend a screening assessment using the Wilkins Rate of Reading test to determine whether coloured overlays could be beneficial.
If overlays prove helpful, a Colorimetry Assessment can then be undertaken to identify the most appropriate precision tint for spectacle lenses.
